Yesterday, I got around to opening some post, and one of the letters I opened was from the hospital, with my appointment for next July’s routine breast check.
I put it straight in the diary.
And I noticed two other diary appointments for 2013. I’m giving talks about my dance with cancer on two dates.
And I felt a little bit crushed.
Now, don’t get me wrong: I’m grateful that all I get is a yearly check-up these days, and when the day comes I will whip off my bra with aplomb and cheerfully discuss my naturally lumpy breasts. And I choose to talk about my experience with cancer and wouldn’t miss one of those opportunities for anything.
But I didn’t like having a diary that only had cancer in it. So I spent a few minutes putting in some other things. Birthdays, the various anniversaries that Alan and I celebrate, including our 10th wedding anniversary and our hypothetical trip to Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons to celebrate (if the financial ducks line up).
And then I felt much better. It doesn’t always take a lot.
What are you looking forward to in 2013? Today might be a good day to put it in your diary!
